CAMARIÑAS BOBBIN LACE POUCHES

Heimat Atlantica is, above all, a project that weaves tradition and Modernity, intertwining art history, design, and spatial collage across time and conventions.

The sound of the Atlantic waves and the rhythmic melody of wooden bobbin lace-making come together in our new Camariñas collection.

Camariñas, a small fishing village on the Costa da Morte, is home to a centuries-old tradition of lace-making passed down through generations of women.

The Camariñas project pays tribute to this heritage, which arrived in Galicia via the sea, brought by Italian traders who followed the Italy-Flanders route during the late Middle Ages.

This incredible cultural exchange between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic was embraced by the matriarchal society of Galicia, where women, seeking to supplement their family income, perfected the art of lace-making, creating exquisite works of craftsmanship.

This project not only celebrates the meticulous artistry of Camariñas lace but also highlights the ways in which cultural practices evolve and adapt through contact with other communities. In a matriarchal context, where women have historically been the custodians of such art forms, this lacework is a powerful symbol of both feminine strength and cultural continuity.
